Prolozone

Prolozone Therapy is a non-surgical procedure to eliminate or drastically reduce pain by facilitating the body’s own natural ability to heal itself by combining prolotherapy and ozone therapy techniques.

With the addition of ozone, a Prolozone approach can heal joints and other structures more efficiently than traditional Prolotherapy.  Connective tissue repairing abilities (by fibroblasts) are further stimulated since ozone is a highly reactive molecule.

Prolozone is an oxygen-ozone injection technique developed and pioneered by Dr. Frank Shallenberger.  It is an injection technique similar to Prolotherapy with the addition of ozone and added nutrients.  Like prolotherapy, it is a form of non-surgical ligament reconstruction and is an excellent treatment for chronic pain.  Prolozone is a connective tissue injection therapy of collagen producing substances and ozone gas which can reconstruct damaged or weakened connective tissue in and around joints.  These substances are injected into the damaged areas in and around a joint to rebuild the damage.

What is Prolozone?

Prolozone is derived from the Latin word “proli” which means to regenerate or rebuild, and the word ozone.  Ozone is the most highly active form of oxygen.   Prolozone uses the power of oxygen to cause damaged tissues, joints, ligaments, and tendons to regenerate. This usually causes a complete healing, and extinguishes pain.

How Does Prolozone Work?

The key to complete injury resolution and healing has to do with circulation and blood flow.  This is one of the major differences between and injury that will not heal.  In order for a damaged area of the body to regenerate it must have the critical elements that blood can provide – vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, growth factors, hormones and oxygen.  One of the more important elements to this is the oxygen component.  Low levels of oxygen cause an accumulation of lactic acid, which is what causes pain.  Many of you will be familiar with pain of lactic acid build up in the sore muscles after period of strenuous exercise.

Prolozone is an injection technique that works to either reduce inflammation and swelling or enhance circulation by increasing blood flow.  The actions are harnessed by using different solutions with oxygen in the form of ozone injected at the same time.  The result is the tissue getting what it needs to heal.  Regeneration, healing and resolution of pain varies from person to person, but, most will require 3-6 treatments.

Your Next Steps

Step 1

History

Your initial session is your opportunity to share your health goals, and for Dr. Sraw to gather vital information that will help determine the root cause of your concerns and to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Step 3

Examination

Your initial session will include a physical examination.  The area of pain and surrounding areas will be examined.  Assessment may include gait assessment, orthopaedic testing and/or applied kinesiology.  Dr. Sraw may also use ultrasound to assess the injured tissue(s).
